It was not just the fireworks that brightened the night in India on Independence Day, but also the ones that flourished on the Bengaluru turf, as the Blue Tigers have four fresh faces included in their Indian roster for the first time, two each at the back and at the front, to add to the excitement and the anticipation within the camp. The BFA/AIFF staff were all smiles while having down the likes of Sunil Benchamin (Army man 32 year) and attacking player Manvir Singh (24 year) back in the team fold after a six year hiatus. This is the start of a brave new time in Indian football.

  • Dakha of Experience and Youth: Manvir Singh, who was part of the India U-19s last in 2019, admitted, “I have waited for six years to pull on this jersey again,” to emphasize his own desire. “I owe [Jamil],” he added, “Must repay his trust,” following four starts and a goal in the Durand Cup.At the other end of the spectrum is Sunil Benchamin, 32, flying the flag for a tradition of the Army – the last such being Subir Sarkar, some four decades ago.
  • Veteran Star Left Out, but Doors Remain Open: Star striker Sunil Chhetri is missing in the CAFA probables as ‘resting’ is given as the reason for the absence. Jamil detailed India’s buildup for the Asian Cup qualifiers and stressed “the door is open always for him”, describing Chhetri as “a legend of Indian football” and “one of my favourite players”. Chhetri is likely to be back for the matches in October against Singapore.
  • Historic Appointment: On 1 August 2025, Jamil was appointed: the first Indian head coach since Savio Medeira in 2012. The AIFF’s technical committee had put its weight behind him after reviewing 170 applications, with some believed to have been hoax entries from Xavi and Guardiola. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey hailed him as “a hard-working individual… [who] should surely bring a change in the team”.
  • Contract & Tactical Timeline: Jamil inked a full-time two-year contract, with the possibility of an extension, and his first real challenge comes in the shape of the CAFA Nations Cup, which kicks off from August 29 in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, before the Asian Cup qualifiers in October.

Context:

  • Coaching Pedigree:It’s been a good journey, first leading a small team (Aizawl FC) from the northeast [to the I-League title in 2017] to the ISL playoffs with NorthEast United as the first Indian coach, then this win with Jamshedpur FC.”
  • Durand Cup Monitoring:Jamil has kept a close watch on the Durand Cup, bringing players in to get a release from the club, as it were, an exercise to spread his talent base.

“My doors are always open to every player. The CAFA Nations Cup will be an excellent opportunity… we will bring our best available squad for the Asian Cup qualifiers.”
  • Manvir Singh:
“I’ve waited six years to put on this jersey once again… I have to take the chance, I must repay his trust.”

Conclusion:

As the last embers of summer fireworks die out, a light is restored on India’s football landscape, a combination of Jamil’s youth, grit and a new story starting to paint over what might well be a defining chapter. A camp that veterans have run for so long, this is a camp ready to bloom. If the new kids can rise, if a few legends like Chhetri can come back burning, there might be a new howl from the Blue Tigers soon: leaner, braver and of a different shape.
