In the 134th Durand Cup, Shillong Lajong FC and NorthEast United FC reached the semifinal stage in very different manners. Shillong Lajong demonstrated their mettle through defense throughout the tournament, not allowing opponents to score with ease, whereas NorthEast United relied more on power of attack and experience. The match again pitted two teams from the Northeast against the final spot.

The Goal Which Changed the Game

The only proper turning point of the night arrived during the 36th minute. Redeem Tlang, a former Shillong Lajong player, takes a left-footed shot from around 30 yards away. The ball deflected in the air and fooled the keeper, Siwel Rymbai, who was wrong side. That shot remained the night’s only goal, and it was ironic because it was scored by a former player of Lajong.

Once trailing, Shillong Lajong attempted to pressurize once more. Their defense was also in place, preventing NEUFC from breaking with ease. Strikers Alaaeddine Ajaraie and Jithin M.S. could not make their mark. Lajong, despite small opportunities, could not provide the right finishing touch.

Missed Opportunities by NorthEast United

NorthEast United dominated the second half. Andy Rodriguez came close to doubling the lead with a free kick that struck the post. Ajaraie also had a clear shot, but he misjudged his kick inside the box. All these missed chances meant Shillong Lajong still had hope until the last few minutes.

Late Drama with Referee Trouble

Shillong Lajong believed that they equalised when Wadajeid directed the ball inside, but the linesman had already flagged offside. That goal was disallowed. Another strange sight occurred when the referee suffered a calf injury and had to be substituted, bringing the game to a halt for some moments.

History Repeats for Lajong

The tale seems like the previous Durand Cup edition, where Shillong Lajong also ended their campaign at the semifinal due to NEUFC. Again, Lajong battled with vigor, but the outcome was a bitter pill. NorthEast United, on the other hand, proved they could manage such pressure games better.

Looking Forward

With this 1–0 win, NorthEast United advanced to their second consecutive Durand Cup final. They will be facing either East Bengal FC or Diamond Harbour FC. Under the guidance of coach Juan Pedro Benali, the team has enough confidence and a winning streak to retain the title again.
